7-9 April 2010 Conference at Porirua

Local youth Josia Rosie and Daniel Moreira from Oxford way, attended this year's conference along with Emma Chapman, Youth Worker from the Oxford Community Trust -with some funding from the Mayors Taskforce via the Waimakariri District Council! YEAH

Here's some snippets from their report back:

"I had a great time at this conference. I met lots of new people but made some good friends from around the country, Emma, Tarati and Tania. What I found liked about getting to know these three was that it was great to connect with people around the country and see other young people like me who are passionate about their communities.

One of the coolest workshops I went to was Called Intellectualising your Art, Business and Career: Michel Tuffery – this was about using art to portray New Zealand Culture.

We also attended a workshop called Experiential Activities to strengthen youth participation which was really fun. It taught us how to use energising exercises like icebreakers etc. not just as icebreakers but to keep everyone active, participating, and engaged in what we is being done at a meeting.

Something I would like to see in the Waimakariri would be something similar to the Maintaining Dignity in Diversity workshop that was run by Keith Vaughn. This really helps you to think about different people and different issues and to respect where others are coming from. I also think it would be great to paint the skatepark in Oxford like the one we saw in Porirua, as it is really bright and attractive, but also would hopefully mean people wouldn't tag as there is already something there."- Josiah

"3 new people I met – Emma Bailey, Laura, Neil. It was interesting to see the diversity in youth councils and also to meet likeminded and similar hearted people from different parts of the country – the friendships have continued to grow.

The coolest project we heard about was a new skatepark that youth were involved in planning and getting up and running that costs $600,000.00

I really enjoyed learning about using energisers to keep meetings going and people interested, and also about how Gary Watson from the CCC got young people to make submissions on the Boy Racer Bill.

I would like to see some workshops for people in the Waimakariri about Maintaining Dignity in Diversity and also a workshop called Red Pill Blue Pill: Creating Change which was run by Global Focus Aotearoa which helps you to focus more on what you have, what you consume and the effects that has on others. Also it would be great to see more art and Kiwi culture shown in the community." - Daniel

----

"I loved this conference and met heaps of people and learnt a lot. It was great to see our guys interacting with young people that they wouldn't usually get a chance to meet and they got so much out of it.

The things that stood out to me and that I would love to see in the Waimakariri were both projects that were presented in a workshop called Celebrating Young People's Successes. The first is the Hamilton City Council's Recognyz Youth Awards. This is fantastic because it recognises young people in different categories, but not for academic or sporting achievements. District wide have heaps of young people who are never going to achieve in this areas but make such an amazing contribution in their communities that it would be great to see an event where they could be recognised.

The other was the Kapiti Youth Council's $300ships, which are like a scholarship. They have 10 of these to give away (it used to be yearly, but now I think it is twice a year) and they receive applications for sports trips, music lessons, anything that will enhance young peoples development, and the young people come in an present their application to the youth council and then they decide who the money is going to. This has been really successful for them and could work well in the Waimak." - Emily
